Small Businesses, Big Reach: How Paladin Builds Quality Through Partnership
When you think about a small business, it is easy to imagine a company serving a relatively small community, working with a handful of customers and a close-knit team. But being a small business does not necessarily mean having a small reach. At Paladin Healthcare, our reach extends far beyond our own walls. While we are a small, family-oriented business ourselves, the products we manufacture and the customers we serve are supported by a much larger network of American businesses, manufacturers, machinists, fabricators, painters and craftspeople. In many ways, the strength of Paladin's manufacturing process comes from the small businesses we choose to work alongside. For us, that choice is intentional. We believe that working with other small businesses allows us to build something that can be difficult to find in a world increasingly dominated by large corporations: genuine relationships. When you know the people making the products you rely on, when you can speak directly with the person responsible for production and when quality is something you can discuss openly, the relationship becomes more than a transaction. It becomes a partnership.
A Small Business Network With a Big Reach
Paladin works with small business partners across the United States to support different aspects of our manufacturing process. Each company brings its own area of expertise, and together, those specialized skills help us create the products our customers rely on. We work with a small business in Ohio that manufactures baskets for us, as well as a Minnesota-based company that produces our acrylic and ABS plastic accessories. Closer to home, we partner with a machine shop and plastic molding company in Kissimmee, Florida, to manufacture adapters and plates. We also work with several other locally owned machine shops and subcontractors, including powder coat painters, who each play an important role in bringing our products together. While these businesses may technically be considered vendors or subcontractors, that terminology does not fully capture the relationships we have built with them. They are partners in our manufacturing process, and their work is an important part of what allows Paladin to continue delivering quality products to our customers.
That network also illustrates something important about the way small businesses can create a much larger impact than their size might suggest. Paladin does not need to operate a massive manufacturing facility with every capability under one roof to have a broad reach. Instead, we are able to work with specialized businesses that have developed expertise in particular areas of manufacturing. One company may be exceptionally skilled at machining, another at molding plastic, another at finishing a product, and another at producing a specific component. By bringing these capabilities together, we can maintain the flexibility and personal relationships of a small business while still supporting a manufacturing network that extends across the country.
The Value of Knowing Who Is Behind the Work
One of the greatest advantages of working with small businesses is the personal relationship that comes with it. At Paladin, we are not working through layers of corporate management every time we need to ask a question, solve a problem or check on a production schedule. In many cases, the owners of the businesses we work with are only one phone call away. That direct line of communication makes a meaningful difference, particularly in manufacturing, where schedules can change, questions can arise and unexpected challenges sometimes need to be addressed quickly. When you have an established relationship with the people actually doing the work, those conversations can happen directly and efficiently. We know who we are speaking with, they understand our expectations, and there is an established level of trust between us.
There is also a different sense of accountability that comes from knowing one another. When we call one of our partners, we are not simply contacting a company. We are speaking with someone whose name and reputation are connected to the work they produce. That personal connection creates a level of investment on both sides. Our partners understand the importance of quality to Paladin, and we understand the importance of their work to our own customers. If a question comes up, we can talk through it. If a production timeline needs to be adjusted, we can discuss it directly. If something needs attention, we know who to call. That accessibility is one of the things we value most about our smallbusiness partnerships, because it allows us to maintain visibility and communication throughout the manufacturing process.
Quality Is Personal
Quality is often discussed in terms of specifications, materials, measurements and manufacturing standards, and all of those things are incredibly important. But we believe quality also comes from the people behind the process. When a business is small enough for its leadership to remain closely involved in its operations, there is often a greater sense of personal responsibility attached to the work. The person making a decision may also be the person answering the phone, overseeing production or checking the finished product. There is a person behind the work who cares about getting it right, and that matters.
At Paladin, that philosophy mirrors the way we operate ourselves. We have always valued personal relationships with our customers, and we bring that same approach to the relationships we build with our manufacturing partners. We do not believe that becoming larger should mean becoming less personal. Instead, we believe our relationships with small businesses allow us to grow our reach without losing the personal touch that helped build Paladin in the first place. When quality is connected to a relationship, it becomes more than a checklist. It becomes a shared expectation between people who know and trust one another.
Supporting American Businesses Along the Way
There is another important part of this model that extends beyond the quality of the products themselves. By partnering with small, U.S.-based businesses, Paladin is also helping support the people who work within those companies. Our network of manufacturing partners reaches across several states and includes businesses in Ohio, Minnesota and Florida, among others. Altogether, Paladin estimates that our network supports close to 200 workers across these American small businesses. That number puts our own size into perspective. A small business can have an impact that reaches much farther than its own employee count might suggest, because every partnership creates another connection and every connection represents people whose work contributes to something larger.
When we think about the people behind our products, we think about the machinist operating equipment in a local shop, the person molding a plastic component, the team powder coating a finished part or the workers manufacturing baskets and specialized accessories. Each of them has a place in the larger picture. Their work may happen miles away from Paladin's facility, but it ultimately becomes part of the products we provide to our customers. That is one of the things we appreciate most about working with small businesses. The impact is not confined to a single company. It moves outward through communities, creating opportunities and supporting workers throughout the country.
Why Relationships Matter in Manufacturing
Technology has made it easier than ever to conduct business across long distances. Orders can be placed online, messages can be sent instantly and production can be tracked digitally. But convenience does not always replace connection. There is still something valuable about being able to pick up the phone and talk to someone who knows your business. There is value in having a relationship that has developed over time rather than a customer service ticket that disappears into a system. There is value in knowing that the person you are working with understands not only what you need, but why you need it.
For Paladin, those relationships help us stay responsive while also giving us confidence in the products we deliver. When we know the businesses manufacturing our components and have direct communication with their leadership, we have greater visibility into our own production process. We can discuss schedules, address questions and work through challenges together. That kind of partnership may be difficult to measure on a spreadsheet, but its impact is easy to recognize. It creates a level of communication and accountability that benefits everyone involved, from the small business producing a single component to the customer ultimately using the finished product.
Small Does Not Mean Limited
There is sometimes an assumption that working with small businesses means sacrificing scale. Our experience has shown us that the opposite can be true. Small businesses can be incredibly specialized, bringing years of knowledge, craftsmanship and expertise to a particular part of the manufacturing process. They can also offer a level of flexibility and accessibility that larger organizations may not always be able to provide. For Paladin, working with these companies allows us to combine the strengths of many specialized businesses while maintaining our own identity as a small company.
Being a small business does not mean being limited in what we can accomplish. At Paladin, we approach every project and partnership with the mentality that no is never the answer. That mindset is possible in large part because of the diverse group of talented people and specialized businesses we have built relationships with over the years. Each partner brings something different to the table, whether it is machining, molding, fabrication, finishing or another area of expertise. When those capabilities come together, we are able to find solutions, take on challenges and create products for a wide range of customers and needs. Rather than looking at a project and asking what cannot be done, we look at the resources, relationships and talent available to us and ask how we can make it happen.
Our network gives us the ability to say yes, even when a project may require a solution that is outside of what one company could accomplish on its own. In that way, our network gives us the best of both worlds. We can have a broad manufacturing reach while keeping the relationships behind that reach personal. We can work with businesses across the country while still knowing the people on the other end of the phone. And we can continue to grow while remaining connected to the small-business values that have always been important to us. Our size does not limit what we can accomplish. Instead, our relationships allow us to accomplish more together, and they give us the confidence to approach every project with the belief that no is never the answer.
Building Something Bigger Together
At the end of the day, Paladin's story is not just about the products we manufacture. It is about the relationships that make those products possible. Our small-business partners are an essential part of that story. From Ohio to Minnesota to right here in Florida, each partner contributes a specialized skill and a personal investment in the work they do. Together, those individual contributions create something much bigger than any one business could create alone.
That is what we mean when we talk about partnership. It is not simply about purchasing a component or outsourcing a manufacturing step. It is about building relationships with people who share our commitment to doing things well. Paladin may be a small business, but our reach is anything but small, and that reach is made stronger because of the other small businesses standing alongside us.
We believe there is real value in knowing the people behind the work. We believe quality is stronger when it is built on trust and accountability. And we believe that when small businesses choose to support one another, the impact can extend far beyond the walls of any single company.
Our network may stretch across the country, but the relationships within it remain personal.
That is how Paladin builds quality: through partnership, through trust and through the belief that when small businesses work together, they can create something much bigger than the sum of their individual parts.
